DESCRIPTION:
APW - Caleb Wheaton, Providence, Rhode Island, verge fusee, 55mm, silver OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1800, incuse "T C" marking below an axe for casemaker Thomas Carpenter, outer with paper for Wm P McKay & Co of Boston, white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, gold hands, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock having grotesque mask at its neck and a mermaid figure at the far end of its table, s#1542. An attractive example of a Federal Period contract watch. Caleb Wheaton was a well known clockmaker located at 83 Main Street in Providence, operating at this location between 1785 and 1827, and presumably contracted the manufacture of the present watch from England.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous gilt plates with few fine scratches and small spots; excellent dial with small edge flake at 6, mild fine scratch near 2, very short fine scratch just left of center, dial appears to be missing one of its posts; excellent hands; outer case shows light wear, an attractive dark patina, dent to upper left perimeter of rear, mild dent to right perimeter of rear, button latch good but with loss of upper cap of button; inner case shows little wear, few nicks or mild dings; bow pivots freely and with some side-to-side slide along pendant pin; good domed glass crystal.
